Breakaway from Cancer®
In 2005, Amgen created the Breakaway from Cancer initiative as a complementary component to its title sponsorship of the Amgen Tour of California.

"One person alone does not beat cancer. It takes a team. Our sponsorship of the Amgen Tour of California provides us with an opportunity to support the millions of people affected by cancer," said Stuart Arbuckle, vice president and general manager, Oncology Business Unit. "Amgen is proud to work with our Breakaway from Cancer nonprofit partners to empower patients by connecting them to important resources and services that support their fight against cancer."

Designed to increase awareness of the comprehensive continuum of resources available to cancer patients and their caregivers, from prevention through survivorship, this year the Breakaway from Cancer initiative expanded to support four charitable partners:

  • National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship (NCCS) is the oldest survivor-led cancer advocacy organization in the country and a returning partner.
  • The Patient Advocate Foundation whose mission is to safeguard patients with chronic, life-threatening and/or debilitating illnesses, assuring access to care, maintenance of employment and preservation of their financial stability is a new partner.
  • Prevent Cancer Foundation whose mission is cancer prevention and early detection through research, education and community outreach to all populations, including children and the underserved is a new partner.
  • The Wellness Community (TWC) is an international, nonprofit organization dedicated to providing free support, education and hope to people affected by cancer and a returning partner.

Additionally, the Lance Armstrong Foundation and Stand Up To Cancer will join forces with the Breakaway from Cancer campaign during the Amgen Tour of California to help spread the word about working together to conquer cancer. The Lance Armstrong Foundation connects people and communities to drive social change and the Stand Up To Cancer initiative raises awareness and funds to accelerate groundbreaking research that will get therapies to patients quickly.
