Amgen Responds to Increased Needs in Our Communities

Basic needs in the community are areas of high concern and active involvement by Amgen and Amgen staff. With the news that many food outlets and emergency assistance/housing programs are suffering as a result of the downturn in the economy, Amgen, the Amgen Foundation and Amgen staff contributed more than $826,000 to local and national emergency assistance and hunger causes in 2008.

Amgen Staff Get Directly Involved In Local Efforts to Address Basic Needs

In addition to monetary donations, Amgen staff have been directly involved with local housing programs and hunger relief agencies through volunteerism and food drives:

  • In November, 2008, members of Amgen Rhode Island’s Amgen Women’s Interactive Network (AWIN) volunteered at the Rhode Island Community Food Bank’s headquarters in Providence. The AWIN volunteers helped sort, inspect and package food donations for distribution.
  • Staff at Amgen Washington actively supported the Northwest Harvest Food Bank, which supplied food to 300 pantries or meal programs in 36 counties across Washington State.
  • Amgen staff in Longmont, Colorado, regularly volunteer at the Outreach United Resource (OUR) Center, Inc, a local emergency assistance organization. OUR Center provides, prepares and serves hot meals to neighbors in need.
  • Food drives and staff volunteer activities occurred at other company sites last year, including Amgen’s Thousand Oaks, Fremont and South San Francisco campuses in California, and Amgen’s Cambridge, Massachusetts, research facility near Boston.
  • In 2008, staff in Fremont and South San Francisco came together on a Saturday to help build a Habitat for Humanity home for a local family in need. Another Bay Area staff day for Habitat for Humanity is scheduled for May 2009.

Amgen is proud of its staff and the Amgen Staff Volunteer Program and Matching Gift Program that support their involvement in our communities.
