Amgen’s Joe Miletich Is a Guest Teacher at a Los Angeles School During Teach For America Week

On April 14, Dr. Joe Miletich, Amgen’s senior vice president of Research and Development, participated in the annual Teach For America Week as a guest teacher in Amgen Fellow Eloy Romero’s eighth grade science class at Foshay Learning Center in Los Angeles. During his visit, Miletich shared with students his personal education and science career path, talked about the life of a scientist, and answered student questions.

“A passion for science begins early,” said Miletich. “I hope sharing my education and career paths as well as my excitement for science can help inspire these bright young students to strive for their goals both in and outside the classroom.”

The students were enthusiastic and asked insightful questions such as: “If you know that a medicine works, and you know what the side effects are, why can’t you just fix the side effects?” and “How come when you see those ads on TV [about dietary supplements] they say they are not approved by the FDA?” and “Do countries around the world have standards for the drugs their people take?”

Each year, Teach For America Week brings more than 150 leaders from a variety of sectors into classrooms across the nation to serve as guest teachers, inspiring students and raising awareness of educational inequity.

Joe Miletich, senior vice president, R&D, was a guest teacher at the Foshay Learning Center in Los Angeles in support of Teach For America Week.

Since its launch in 1997, Teach For America Week has enlisted thousands of America’s most notable figures to share their knowledge and personal insights with thousands of students in urban and rural public schools.

Students in Amgen Fellow Eloy Romero’s eighth grade science class at the Foshay Learning Center asked Amgen’s Joe Miletich insightful questions during Teach For America Week.

“The Amgen-Teach For America Math and Science Summit and support of Teach For America Week are two important elements of the Amgen Foundation’s significant efforts to help improve math and science education in this country,” said Jean J. Lim, president of the Amgen Foundation.

“Our goal is to provide teachers the tools and resources necessary to inspire young children across all socio-economic levels to explore a future in science.”
