Licensing

Our dedicated staff, valued partnerships, scientific leadership and good luck have brought us great success. To further that success, Amgen is engaged in active outreach to the best scientific organizations worldwide.

Because we embrace the best ideas in science, building effective collaborations of all kinds–from early stage development to late stage licensing–is a priority for Amgen. We currently have more than 100 active collaborations and continue to seek innovative product candidates and technologies that will complement our in-house capabilities, strengthen our product portfolio and deliver breakthrough therapeutics to improve people’s lives.

Advantages to Our Partners

Backed by Amgen’s financial strength and stability, your product will have the necessary support to realize its potential. We are well-positioned to secure and dedicate resources to the right opportunities.

Yet financial stability alone is not enough. The success of your opportunity also depends on a strong infrastructure like that which Amgen provides. Our research facilities currently support several development programs across a wide range of therapeutic areas.

We built our reputation on protein therapeutics. But we also have a productive small molecule research and development program. Moreover, we offer world-class capabilities in antibody research and development.

Our research expertise is backed by development capabilities in many countries around the world. Amgen conducts definitive clinical trials with clear endpoints, and we offer the benefit of years of experience with the Food and Drug Administration and other regulatory bodies worldwide, which may help expedite review and approval of your product candidate.

Furthermore, our state-of-the-art production facilities and our experienced manufacturing staff can expedite your product’s launch. Particularly in the challenging production of protein therapeutics, Amgen has a track record of ensuring timely and uninterrupted supply worldwide.

Amgen also offers the commercialization experience necessary for a successful launch. Over the past two decades, our product teams have been responsible for several of the industry’s most successful launches of injectable therapeutics. In 2004, we launched our first small molecule therapeutic, Sensipar® (cinacalcet HCI), a program in-licensed from NPS Pharmaceuticals.

Drawing upon our breadth of experience and pooling our resources from start to finish, we can help you fully and quickly achieve your product’s potential.

The Process

Amgen actively seeks innovations within other companies and universities that will enhance our capabilities and augment our therapeutic offerings. Although our scientists and corporate development specialists are in constant contact with their peers, we encourage researchers to contact us with potential opportunities.

We strive to ensure that your opportunity receives a prompt yet comprehensive evaluation. Our process involves three key steps.

First, our Licensing team conducts an initial evaluation of the non-confidential data you provide. Next, an integrated evaluation team examines confidential data in detail. This team may include members of your staff as well as Amgen licensing specialists and representatives from research, manufacturing, preclinical and clinical development, sales and marketing, senior management, law and corporate development, as appropriate. Finally, Amgen Licensing leads due diligence efforts, along with the negotiation of licensing terms.

The integrated team assigned to your proposal is empowered to make decisions quickly and will work with you to determine how well our combined resources might further your project or technology. We have found that this approach enables us to collaborate very effectively with our partners. It also ensures that, together, we can complete our transaction in the shortest possible time and start the important work of moving a compound toward commercialization or incorporating the new technology into our R&D efforts.

Amgen is also flexible in its approach to partnering. Our alliances have been structured on a case-by-case basis. We have partnered through equity investments, milestone/royalty payments and broad research collaborations. In each relationship, we work to create agreements that further the goals and objectives of both parties, while advancing science and medicine to improve the lives of people around the world.

Partnership Types

Amgen forms licensing partnerships around innovative product candidates and technologies.

Product Candidates

Typically, when an Amgen team evaluates a product opportunity, its members look for compounds possessing the following:

  • A well-validated target
  • A novel mechanism of action
  • Well-characterized pharmaceutical properties
  • Strong preclinical or clinical data
  • A strong intellectual property position

Further, the ideal candidate must have the potential to significantly improve patients’ lives by filling an unmet medical need. We also look for synergies with existing Amgen business units yet would consider opportunities in other therapeutic categories, given compelling metrics.

Technologies

Amgen’s technology licensing agreements, like our operations, have all been science-driven. That is, they provide us access to a capability that furthers our existing programs and are consistent with our research strategies.
